Bessho Onsen No.4 Source
Analysis UnverifiedBessho Onsen No.4 Source is one of the springs of Bessho Onsen, a 1,400-year-old spa some link to the "Nanakuri no yu" praised in The Pillow Book, and it is said to feed the drinking fountain at Kitamuki Kannon temple. Nearly clear, the water carries a toasty sulfur aroma and an alkaline softness that wraps the skin in a slippery smoothness. It suits travelers who want a quiet soak at the gate of an ancient temple.
The bar length shows how abundant each component is compared to thresholds that make it "distinctive" (therapeutic spring standards, beauty spring criteria, etc.).
A trace component with gentle antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.
The aroma typical of sulfur springs, with circulatory and antibacterial effects.
Scores are calculated from mineral analysis data based on the Mineral Spring Analysis Guidelines (Ministry of Environment, Japan). They are unrelated to facility atmosphere or service quality.
▸Note
The temperature, pH and component values shown here are based on the hot spring analysis (source). Actual values in the bath may differ depending on heating, dilution, recycling and filtration. Please check current usage status at the facility.
The source emerges at 50.4°C, so check the temperature near the spout before entering. Avoid long soaks because of the hydrogen sulfide, remove silver jewelry, and moisturize afterward, as pH 8.8 water strips skin oils.
With an alkaline pH of 8.8 and 46.2 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, the water gently softens the skin, leaving it silky after bathing. Its 7.3 mg/kg of hydrosulfide ion reflects a sulfur spring long valued in toji culture for immune system stimulation.
As the water contains hydrogen sulfide, mind ventilation and leave at once if you feel unwell. The source is hot, so watch for dizziness and overheating.
